Rabbi Yair Paran, (Rikmah ’23) Responds to Chief Rabbi’s: “Haredim will leave Israel if drafted”

March 14, 2024

One week ago, Rav Yitzchak Yosef, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, and son of Rav Ovadya Yosef, z”l, made the highly provocative statement that if drafted, the Haredim will all leave Israel.

In an interview on Israeli TV, Rabbi Yair Paran (Rikmah ’23), great grandson of Rav Ovadya Yosef, responds vigorously to this statement of his great uncle, arguing that there is no justification, not halakhic and certainly not moral, for 66,000 Haredi men of draftable age to be sitting and learning when there is a war going on and so many Israelis are risking and tragically sacrificing their lives to defend Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael.
